Difficult Access / Cannulation Pathway

If there’s a difficult cannula, firstly check if it’s after hours (14:00 onwards).

  1. First, contact ambulatory care (9616 8111) and tell them that there’s a difficult cannula. The ambulatory care consultant will try.
  2. If it’s after hours, contact the after hours CNC and discuss the difficult cannula.
  3. ED + ICU have a portable ultrasound. You can try asking to borrow their ultrasound machines.
  4. Otherwise, discuss with anaesthetics or the ICU registrar to attempt cannulation with/without ultrasound.
